COOKIE THROWDOWN F.A.Q.
WHAT IS THE ST. JOHN'S COOKIE THROWDOWN?
It's part cookie baking competition, part cookie bake sale. You can sign up as a baker to bring homemade cookies and compete in one of eight Cookie Throwdown categories...
Or if you just want to eat cookies, you can show up and buy the things that these amazing cookie bakers have created.
It's a WIN-WIN-WIN.
WHAT'S THIS A FUNDRAISER FOR?
All of the dough raised (rimshot!) will help us put together a little thing called the Stand-Up Challenge — a creative project inspired by the NLRPM Challenge and designed to encourage people in Newfoundland & Labrador to write, rehearse and perform a five-minute set of original stand-up comedy in the month of June. Like the RPM, this won't be a contest, and there will be no winners and no losers. It's guaranteed to be ridiculous, painful, hilarious and amazing.
Coordinated by NLRPM organizer Elling Lien it will be presented by Unpossible NL, a brand new organization with big plans for encouraging creativity and community in Newfoundland & Labrador.
SO... BACK TO THESE COOKIES... I CAN... BUY THESE COOKIES?
Yes, yes you can! Come down to the Rocket Room on Sunday, April 3 at 1pm, and five bucks will get you six tickets. Each of those tickets will get you one cookie of your choice. Want more than six? You can buy as many tickets as there are cookies available. And that's gonna be a lot of cookies. Hoooollllyyy smokes.
WHAT ARE THE CATEGORIES?
The categories are: Best Use of an Unexpected Ingredient, Best Decorated, Best Kid's Entry, Best Professional Entry, Best Chocolate Chip, Best Vegan, Best Gluten Free, and Best Use of a Newfoundland Ingredient. There is also a People's Choice Award which is open to all bakers.
WHAT'S THE PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD?
All of the bakers and eaters can vote to select their favourite for the People's Choice category! Ballots will be available and you will be able to vote for any of the cookies in the running. One ballot per batch of six tickets.
HEY, I BAKE AMAZING COOKIES! WHEN CAN I SIGN UP AS A BAKER?
Any time! Registration is available RIGHT NOW for just $10 online right here. You should totally sign up! Bake some cookies! Have a laugh!
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO ONCE I REGISTER AS A BAKER?
By signing up you're committing to bringing 26 cookies on a tray to the Rocket Room at 12 noon on April 3. We’ll give you a little sign to fill out your cookie details. You’ll be able to pick out eight cookies from other bakers before anyone else gets there.
After you’ve done all that, the results of the judging will be announced at 4pm. You're not required to attend or monitor your cookies in the meantime of course, and if you win something and you're not there we'll contact you to make sure you get your sweet prizes. We've been collecting prize donations from local businesses and artisans since February, so the prize pile is growing and awesome.
CAN I ENTER MY COOKIES IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY?
Yes, but you will have to pay the registration fee in each category using the online form and bake a batch of 26 cookies for each time you sign up.
CAN KIDS PARTICIPATE IN CATEGORIES OTHER THAN THE KIDS CATEGORY?
Definitely! All ages are welcome.
CAN PROFESSIONALS PARTICIPATE IN A CATEGORY OTHER THAN THE PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY?
DO I HAVE TO DECIDE IN ADVANCE WHAT CATEGORY MY COOKIES ARE COMPETING IN?
No need to decide yet! As long as you’ve registered and paid for the number of categories you’re competing in, you can just let us know that on the day.
CAN I JUST BRING COOKIES TO THE EVENT WITHOUT REGISTERING AS A BAKER IN ADVANCE?
We encourage all bakers to register in advance at www.unpossible.co, but we will reserve a VERY LIMITED number of baker spots for the day, so people can just show up with cookies. But no promises!
WHO COUNTS AS A PROFESSIONAL BAKER?
Anyone who’s baked for money. This includes farmers’ market vendors, food bloggers, cookbook authors, pastry chefs and restauranteurs.
CAN MY FRIENDS AND I WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM?
Yes! There's reason why you need to make your cookies in solitude! Cookie teams are most welcome.
IS THERE A MINIMUM OR MAXIMUM COOKIE SIZE?
As long as you can get your cookies through the door and up the stairs to the Rocket Room on April 3, you’re cool.
WHAT'S YOUR DEFINITION OF A COOKIE?
If you call it a cookie, it’s a cookie.
